It began with email. Then Usenet. Then Livejournal. Then InsaneJournal. Then Facebook. Then Twitter. Then Google+. And the reasons were always the same (at least after email). I am fortunate enough to have friends spread far and wide, and curious and concerned enough to want to know how they're doing. Some use several forms of social media, and some use only one. However, enough have migrated over here that I decided to create an account (free, at first) to continue to follow your shenanigans and goings-on. Since there was no requirement for an invitation at this time, I went ahead and did it.
